How Much RAM Does My Minecraft Server Need?

RAM is the single biggest thing that decides how many players your server can hold and how smoothly it runs. Pick too little and your server stutters; pick far too much and you are paying for memory you never touch. This guide helps you land on the right amount without overthinking it.

These are comfortable starting points, not hard limits. It is always easy to upgrade later if you outgrow your plan, so there is no need to over-buy on day one.


What actually uses your RAM

Four things drive how much memory your server needs. Understanding them helps you judge your own setup instead of guessing.

Players. Each connected player loads the world around them and adds entities, inventories, and activity the server has to track. More players means more memory, but this is usually the smallest factor of the four.

Mods and plugins. This is the big one. A vanilla server is lean. A heavy modpack can add hundreds of new blocks, entities, and systems that all live in memory at once, which is why modpacks need far more RAM than a plain server with the same player count.

View distance and simulation distance. These settings decide how many chunks of the world the server keeps loaded and actively ticking around each player. Higher values look and feel better but multiply memory use quickly. See Server Properties for where to change them.

World size and activity. Large explored worlds, lots of loaded chunks, redstone contraptions, mob farms, and hoppers all add ongoing work and memory pressure.


Sizing by server type

Vanilla and Paper (plugins). These are efficient. Most friend-group and community servers are comfortable in the 2 to 6GB range. Paper is the recommended default because it handles memory and performance better than plain Vanilla or Spigot at the same RAM. Modpacks (Forge and Fabric). Modpacks are the reason people overspend and underspend. A light pack with a handful of friends is usually fine on 6GB. A heavy kitchen-sink pack wants 8 to 10GB even for a small group, because the memory cost comes from the mods themselves, not the player count. The modpack's own page often states a recommended server RAM figure; treat that as a floor, not a ceiling.

Networks and big communities. Once you are past roughly 40 concurrent players or running several linked servers, you are into the 8 to 10GB range and beyond, and CPU starts to matter as much as RAM (see below).


Signs you have too little RAM

Your server will usually tell you when memory is tight:

  • The server stutters or freezes briefly for everyone at the same moment, especially when it is busy
  • Console shows Can't keep up! Is the server overloaded?
  • Console shows java.lang.OutOfMemoryError, or the server crashes and restarts under load
  • Performance is fine with two players and falls apart with ten

RAM is not the only thing that matters

It is tempting to treat RAM as the only number, but Minecraft runs most of its core work on a single CPU thread. That means a server can have plenty of free RAM and still lag if the CPU thread is overloaded by things like huge redstone machines, thousands of mobs, or a plugin doing heavy work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upgrade my RAM later? Yes. Upgrading is self-serve and your world and settings carry across, so it is safe to start smaller and move up when you actually need to.

Is more RAM always better? No. Beyond what your server actually uses, extra RAM sits idle and does nothing for performance. It is better to right-size and spend the difference elsewhere, or just save it.

Do I count RAM per player? Not really. RAM does not scale neatly per player because mods, view distance, and world activity usually matter more than head count. Use the table above as your guide rather than a per-player formula.

My modpack says it needs 8GB on the client. Does the server need the same? Client and server RAM are separate. A server does not render graphics, so it often needs less than the client figure, but heavy packs are still memory-hungry. Use our modpack ranges above as your starting point.
