How much RAM does a Minecraft server need?

A Minecraft server spends most of its memory before anybody joins. The server software and the mods or plugins you install take up space on their own. Each player who joins adds a smaller amount on top, made up of a fixed cost for their inventory and the entities near them, plus the chunks they keep loaded, which depends entirely on your view distance.
That is why the biggest factor in this calculator is the kind of server you run rather than how many people play on it. A vanilla server with thirty players can need less memory than a modpack with three.

RAM by server type

These are the floors this calculator works from, before adding an allowance for your players. A modpack will not run acceptably below its minimum no matter how few people are online, because the mods load whether anyone is playing or not.

How many players each plan holds

The same plan holds very different numbers of players depending on what you run. A modpack has already spent most of the memory before anyone joins, so there is far less left over per player. These assume default settings, which you can change in the calculator above.

What else changes the answer

Server type and player count get you most of the way, but a handful of settings move the number enough to be worth accounting for. Each of these is available in the Advanced mode of the calculator above.
View distance
How far players can see, measured in chunks. Every player holds a square of chunks loaded around them, so the memory that square uses grows with the square of the number. Going from 10 to 8 sounds like a small change but removes about a third of the chunk memory your players use, and most people will not notice it on a survival world. It is the biggest single lever on this page.

Simulation distance
How far from a player things keep ticking: mobs move, crops grow, and redstone runs. Chunks past this distance are still loaded and still visible, they simply sit idle. It is normally set at or below your view distance. Lowering it trims the memory spent tracking entities, though the bigger win is usually to your CPU rather than your RAM.

Minecraft version
Worlds got taller in 1.18, going from 256 blocks to 384. Every chunk now holds half again as much block data as it used to, so the same view distance costs more memory on a modern version than it did on 1.16. Older versions are not automatically cheap to run, though. They are less efficient in other ways, and 1.12.2 era modpacks in particular are demanding despite the shorter worlds.

How spread out your players are
Two players standing together are mostly keeping the same chunks loaded, so they cost far less than two players on opposite sides of the map. A server built around one shared base holds a fraction of the distinct chunks that the same group would if everyone ran their own far flung outpost. If your players explore separately, budget more.

Extra worlds
Each world keeps its spawn chunks resident whether anyone is standing in it or not. The usual overworld, nether and end are already counted. Anything beyond that, whether it is a creative world added through a plugin like Multiverse or the extra dimensions a modpack brings with it, carries its own cost on top. A plain vanilla server has no way to add worlds, so this does not apply there.

Live map plugins
Dynmap, BlueMap and squaremap render your world into map tiles you can browse in a web page. They hold map data in memory while rendering and keep working quietly in the background as players explore new ground, which is why they want a few hundred megabytes of their own on top of the server itself. They run as a plugin or a mod, so a plain vanilla server cannot use them.

RAM is not the only thing that matters

Memory is the number everyone talks about, but it is rarely what limits a server first. Minecraft leans heavily on single thread CPU speed, so a server can sit at a comfortable memory level and still run poorly if the processor cannot keep up with the world it has to simulate.
Every MCHosts plan is given the same CPU allocation regardless of price, so a starter plan gets the same processing headroom as our largest. That is deliberate. It means the only thing you have to choose is how much memory you need, and it is why this calculator only asks about RAM.
