Bedrock Edition is the Minecraft most people own without thinking about it. It's the one on iPhone and Android, on the Windows app and on every console.
Underneath, it's a different game from Java Edition, and the two can't share a server on their own. So it's worth knowing which one your group plays before anyone sets anything up.
THE GAME
What Minecraft Bedrock Edition asks of a server
One world, every device
Players on different devices share one Bedrock world with nothing extra to install. Consoles are the fussy ones. They only list Mojang's featured servers, so reaching any other server means changing the DNS setting in the console's network menu.
Bedrock updates itself
Updates arrive on every device without anyone asking for them. A server still on the older version turns those players away, so a Bedrock server has to follow Mojang's releases to stay joinable.
Add-on packs
Behaviour packs and resource packs take the place of Java's mods and plugins. They can add mobs and blocks or change how everything looks.
Open when the host is offline
A world that lives on someone's phone is only open while they're playing. A server keeps it going for the rest of the group, whoever started it.

Which Minecraft does your group play?
Java Edition is the one for PC, Mac and Linux, and it's where plugins and mods live. Bedrock is on phones, tablets, consoles and the Windows app from the Microsoft Store.
If you're not sure which you have, check the title screen. Bedrock has a Marketplace button and Java doesn't.
A group that's all on Bedrock wants a Bedrock server

Our Java servers have free crossplay. Turn it on for a Paper, Fabric, Forge or NeoForge server and Bedrock players land in the same world as their Java friends.
A console still needs its DNS setting changed first, the same as for any server outside Mojang's featured list.

We do not host Minecraft Bedrock Edition yet
There is no date on this one and we are not going to invent one. What we do run today is Minecraft, Hytale, Terraria, Palworld and Project Zomboid, all on Australian hardware.
